Hasan Reaches Career-Best Ranking, Sobhana Makes Significant Progress

Although Bangladesh failed to win the only Test against Afghanistan, Hasan Mahmud achieved the best ranking of his career through his individual performance. Litton Kumar Das and Ebadot Hossain also improved their positions. The ICC released its weekly update of the men’s player rankings yesterday, as usual.
Mr. Hasan is now ranked 38th among Test bowlers. The right-arm pacer first reached the 38th position in August after performing well against Australia.
Mr. Hasan took five wickets in the first innings in Abu Dhabi, including a hat-trick. He became the first Bangladeshi fast bowler to take three wickets in three consecutive deliveries in a Test. He claimed one more wicket in the second innings. His performance helped him climb seven places in the rankings.
Mr. Ebadot took four wickets in the first innings and three in the second, moving up 11 places to 67th. Mehidy Hasan Miraz climbed one place to 22nd after taking four wickets in the match. Among Bangladeshi bowlers in the Test rankings, only Taijul Islam is ahead of Miraz. The left-arm spinner dropped three places to 18th.
Litton Kumar Das scored 53 and 102 in the two innings of the Test. He climbed three places to share 29th position with India’s KL Rahul. Tanzid Hasan, who scored a half-century in the first innings, moved up 10 places to 92nd. Mushfiqur Rahim dropped one place to 18th but remains Bangladesh’s highest-ranked batter. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also slipped one place to 21st.
Despite being in a difficult position for much of the match, Rahmat Shah and Sediqullah Atal played major roles in helping Afghanistan move towards a draw in the Test. After scoring a century in the first innings and a half-century in the second, Afghanistan captain Rahmat climbed 13 places to 13th. Atal moved up 41 places to 91st after scoring a century in the second innings.
In the Test all-rounder rankings, Miraz is third, behind South Africa’s Marco Jansen and India’s Ravindra Jadeja.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s women’s team suffered a whitewash on their tour of Australia. They lost the first two matches by large margins and conceded the series. However, outstanding batting performances in the second ODI helped Bangladesh batters Sobhana Mostary and Nigar Sultana Joty improve their rankings. The ICC released its weekly update of the women’s rankings on Thursday night, as usual.
In the second ODI in Brisbane, Bangladesh were struggling at 8 for three wickets in the eighth over when Ms. Sobhana came to the crease and delivered an outstanding performance. She scored an impressive 118 runs, her first career century. She also became the first Bangladeshi batter to score a century on Australian soil against Australia. In addition, she became the first Bangladeshi to score a century against Australia at any venue.
With that historic achievement, Sobhana climbed 11 places to share her career-best 35th position in the ODI rankings.
In the same match, captain Ms. Joty shared a 195-run partnership with Ms. Sobhana, the highest partnership by any wicket for Bangladesh in this format. It was also the highest partnership by any wicket for a women’s team against Australia. Joty scored 74 runs during the historic stand, moving up 11 places to share 24th position in the rankings.
Another Bangladeshi batter, Ritu Moni, climbed 10 places to 78th after scoring 45 runs off 63 balls in the first match. India’s Smriti Mandhana continues to top the ODI batting rankings, followed by South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt.
There were no significant changes in the bowling rankings. Nahida Akter remains Bangladesh’s highest-ranked bowler, although she dropped five places to 16th. Australia’s Alana King tops the bowling rankings.
There was no change in the top six of the all-rounder rankings, with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner retaining the top position.
