Massive Delhi INDIA Bloc Rally: ‘Democracy Survives Only If Modi Steps Down’

Hundreds of thousands of protesters flooded Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan on Sunday as the opposition INDIA bloc organized its massive ‘Save Votes, Save India’ rally. Overflowing the venue’s standard capacity of 50,000 to 75,000, the demonstration spilled into the surrounding streets of the national capital. The mega event was launched to demand the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and to protest alleged vote manipulation in the country’s electoral rolls following the 2024 general elections.

The day’s events began with a high-profile bus march from the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, alongside Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and top coalition figures, traveled in an open-top vehicle toward the venue, escorted by thousands of enthusiastic party workers and civil society members. In response to the scale of the mobilization, Delhi Police deployed massive security contingents and placed the entire area under strict CCTV surveillance to maintain order throughout the march.

Delivering a fiery address to the crowd, Rahul Gandhi mounted a direct attack on the ruling government and the Special Intensive Revision process. He stated, ‘Lakhs of people have walked here. This voice does not belong to any single political party or leader; it is the collective voice of India’s youth, farmers, and laborers.’ Directly challenging the PM, Mr. Gandhi warned, ‘Narendra Modi ji, you cannot go anywhere. We will not let you go. After Gyanesh Kumar, we are coming for you,’ while asserting that 15 percent of voter names had been unlawfully deleted.

Joining the scathing attack, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Election Commission of acting at the beck and call of the ruling establishment while undermining constitutional principles. Emphasizing the gravity of the political crisis, Mr. Kharge declared, ‘The Modi government is destroying the country’s democratic framework by misusing power. India’s democracy will survive only if the Narendra Modi government steps down from power today.’ He noted that ordinary citizens had taken to the streets because they would no longer remain silent over their fundamental rights.

The Ramlila Maidan assembly followed a symbolic ‘People’s Impeachment’ held a day earlier at Kharge’s residence, where opposition leaders symbolically tried the Chief Election Commissioner for betraying the Constitution. Political analysts view the massive turnout, comprising political workers, students, and ordinary citizens, as a clear signal of widespread anger against the current electoral process. Oppositional leaders concluded the rally by vowing to take this struggle from the streets to Parliament until voting rights and constitutional guarantees are fully restored.
