PM’s New York Visit Highlights Bangladesh’s Global Diplomatic Role
UN General Assembly’s 81st Session Begins
Against the backdrop of multiple global challenges, including geopolitical instability, economic uncertainty and the climate crisis, the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially began at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday. As in previous years, the General Assembly has once again become the main platform for policy-making, dialogue and consensus-building among the international community. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will arrive in New York on September 21 to attend the historic session.
Diplomatic analysts view the visit as a significant milestone for presenting Bangladesh’s domestic transformation, economic policies and international priorities on the global stage amid the changing global context.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is taking place at a time when multilateral diplomacy is facing one of its toughest tests. Global conflicts, trade restrictions, inflation and the growing debt burden on developing countries are weakening international solidarity. At the same time, progress towards fulfilling commitments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 has slowed.
The key discussions at this year’s session are focused on effective steps to end wars, reforming multilateral institutions, restoring free trade and ensuring climate justice worldwide. Bangladesh has consistently maintained a strong position in support of the multilateral system. As a result, Dhaka’s role at this year’s session is drawing special attention from the international community.
Prime Minister’s Schedule and High-Level Engagements
According to Foreign Ministry sources, the Prime Minister’s busy diplomatic schedule will begin after he arrives at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on September 21. Along with addressing the high-level general debate, he will take part in several multilateral summits and bilateral meetings.
Meeting with UN Secretary-General: At the beginning of the visit, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will hold a bilateral meeting with the UN Secretary-General. Discussions will focus on Bangladesh’s contribution to international peacekeeping missions, regional stability and the effective participation of developing countries in global governance.
Bilateral discussions: Preparations have been made for sideline meetings with heads of government and state from the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the Middle East and various allied countries in Asia. Bangladesh’s national interests, bilateral trade and strategic cooperation will receive priority in these discussions.
The Prime Minister will also address several high-level side events on reviewing progress towards the SDGs, digital innovation and global food security.
Bangladesh’s Priorities in the General Debate
In his address to the annual general debate of the UN General Assembly, the Bangladesh Prime Minister will present a balanced outline covering national policies, regional security and global justice.
According to policy-making sources, the speech will present Bangladesh’s current economic transformation to the international community. The measures taken to ensure institutional accountability, create an investment-friendly environment and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) will be highlighted.
In particular, the Prime Minister will call for international partnerships for the sustainable transformation of the ready-made garment sector, employment opportunities for young people in the technology sector and green industrialisation.
Permanent Solution to the Rohingya Crisis
Bangladesh will once again strongly raise the demand for the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of more than one million Rohingyas from Myanmar currently sheltered in the country.
The Prime Minister will draw the attention of world leaders to the need to ensure that international attention does not shift away from this humanitarian crisis due to Myanmar’s internal instability. At the same time, he will strongly urge the international community to address the funding shortfall in international relief efforts.
Climate Justice and International Compensation
Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to the harmful effects of climate change. Rising sea levels, river erosion and frequent natural disasters caused by global warming are directly affecting the country’s economy.
In his speech, the Prime Minister will make a clear demand that developed countries responsible for carbon emissions honour their commitments under the Paris Agreement and ensure the swift implementation of the ‘Loss and Damage’ fund.
Alongside political diplomacy, economic diplomacy is one of the key objectives of the visit. During the trip, a special business roundtable has been arranged with executives of Wall Street and leading US technology companies in New York.
