Rahul’s Strategy to Expand the Protest Across States

The ongoing anti-government protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter list irregularities will temporarily shift from the national capital to respective states for the upcoming festive season, including Durga Puja, Navratri, and Dussehra. The decision aims to allow demonstrators to celebrate with their families while sustaining momentum through state-level agitation organized by opposition parties and civil society groups, including the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
Despite the planned decentralization, Delhi Police is maintaining a strict security posture. Following a request from local authorities, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved keeping an additional 27,000 paramilitary personnel stationed in the capital through October 20. The decision follows strategic discussions hosted by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who advised alliance leaders during a tea meeting at his residence to sustain state-level demonstrations while remaining prepared for swift mobilization back to New Delhi on short notice.
Security measures were initially heightened ahead of the CJP’s October 10 rally toward Jantar Mantar. Although police prevented demonstrators from assembling at the designated protest site, scattered demonstrations broke out across the capital, resulting in clashes with security forces.
More than 50,000 personnel including 27,000 paramilitary troops airlifted from several states, including West Bengal were deployed across the city. Authorities indicated that security arrangements will remain in place until a formal review after October 20.
Indian Youth Inspired by Bangladesh Protests: AISA Chief
Neha Bora, National President of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), stated in a video message released by the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front that India’s Gen-Z movement draws inspiration from student-led pro-democracy protests in Bangladesh. Expressing solidarity, Bora noted that Indian youth are learning key strategies from Bangladesh’s struggle for democratic rights and free elections to build a stronger South Asia.
CJP Leaders Remanded; Opposition Condemns Crackdown
Meanwhile, a Delhi magistrate court remanded top CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurabh Das to five days of judicial custody following their arrest for trespassing after unfurling the national flag at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday.
Opposition leaders strongly criticized the judicial order. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi condemned the arrests, stating that peacefully raising the national flag is not a crime and calling the government’s actions an act of cowardice. He reiterated that protests by civil society, students, and the INDIA coalition form a unified struggle for constitutional rights.
CJP founder Abhijit Dipke welcomed Gandhi’s support and questioned why hoisting the national flag was treated as a breach of peace. Several prominent leaders including AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, DMK chief M.K. Stalin, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray also publicly condemned the detentions.
Severe Public Disruption Amid Police Crackdown
Heavy security measures caused widespread commuting disruptions across Delhi as police requisitioned at least 600 Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) public buses to transport personnel and detainees. Furthermore, ANI reported that police removed over 500 social media posts accused of spreading discontent, suspended mobile internet service in Central Delhi, and allegedly deleted video recordings from detainees’ phones.
MPs and Student Activists Detained During March
Tensions flared further after police revoked protest permissions at Jantar Mantar on October 12. Despite prohibitions, members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) marched from Ferozeshah Road toward Jantar Mantar, resulting in the detention of over 100 activists.
Detainees included Rajya Sabha MP Dr. V. Sivadasan, DYFI All India President and MP A. A. Rahim, SFI All India President Adarsh M. Saji, DYFI leader Jaick C. Thomas, and SFI executive member Abhijit. The SFI reported on X that police forcibly relocated detainees to undisclosed locations.
In response to alleged police excess, activists from the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) demonstrated outside the Parliament Street Police Station, leading to additional detentions.
