Regarding Certainty about Someone Being Destined for Paradise or Hell

Nurul Afsar via email
Question: Lately, when someone passes away, people are sometimes heard declaring, ‘This person is bound for Paradise’ or ‘This person is bound for Hell.’ Is it proper to speak in this manner?
Answer: It is not proper to state with certainty that a specific person is destined for Paradise or Hell. Aside from the ten Companions explicitly given glad tidings of Paradise by the Noble Prophet (PBUH) and other Companions verified through Hadith, such definitive labels cannot be applied to anyone. The only exception is if there is absolute, undeniable proof of someone’s shirk (polytheism) or kufr (disbelief). It must always be remembered that granting deliverance from Hell or admitting someone into Paradise rests entirely upon the mercy of Allah the Almighty.
