Government Focuses on Domestic Gas Production; Another 30 Million Cubic Feet to Be Added to National Grid
Tk 5.92 Billion Project to Boost Titas Gas Output and Add 30 Million Cubic Feet to the National Grid

The government has taken an initiative to drill two new exploration and development wells at the Titas Gas Field to increase domestic gas production and reduce dependence on imports. The project, estimated to cost Tk 5.92 billion, involves drilling Titas-32 and Titas-33 wells. Once operational, the two wells are expected to supply around 30 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid.
The project is also expected to contribute positively to the country’s energy supply and economic activities through condensate production.
According to the latest information provided to Daily Inqilab by a senior Petrobangla official, the country’s largest gas field, Titas, currently produces 323.1 million cubic feet of gas per day, against its production capacity of 542 million cubic feet. This indicates scope for increasing output. Drilling the two new wells is considered an important initiative to utilise this potential and strengthen domestic gas supplies.
The project, titled “Drilling of Two Exploration and Development Wells (Titas-32 and Titas-33) at Titas Gas Field,” is scheduled to be placed before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at its meeting on October 25 for approval.
The project will be implemented by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL), under Petrobangla. The implementation period has been set from October 2026 to September 2029.
Of the total project cost, Tk 4.144 billion is planned to come from government funding, while BGFCL will contribute Tk 1.776 billion from its own funds. The initial estimated cost was Tk 6.32 billion, but it was reduced to Tk 5.92 billion following recommendations from the Project Evaluation Committee. The revision aims to control costs while developing important energy infrastructure.
Petrobangla Chairman Abdul Mannan said the two new wells could produce around 30 million cubic feet of gas and 18 barrels of condensate daily. According to him, the additional gas supply would strengthen the national grid and help reduce dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
According to the project proposal, the two wells could produce around 100.74 billion cubic feet of gas and 60,444 barrels of condensate over 10 years.
At current wellhead prices, the value of the gas and condensate produced is estimated at around Tk 3.3907 billion. However, based on consumer-level gas prices, the estimated value of the gas produced over the same period would be Tk 65.2397 billion.
To increase domestic gas production, the government has set a target of drilling 150 onshore wells by 2031. It also plans to drill another 150 wells between 2031 and 2035. The Titas-32 and Titas-33 wells have been prioritised under this broader programme.
The project was developed based on an analysis of data from three-dimensional seismic surveys conducted at the Titas and Bakhrabad gas fields between 2010 and 2012. The surveys identified potential locations for new wells.
In addition to drilling, the project will include the installation of gas collection pipelines and the appointment of necessary consultants.
A CPD energy expert said the initiative could bring positive changes to gas supplies if it successfully increases the capacity of domestic energy sources. The project could also help save foreign currency by reducing LNG imports, improve fuel supply to industrial facilities and strengthen the country’s long-term energy security.
