UAE Declares Friday Holiday for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi

In honour of the Prophet’s birthday, the United Arab Emirates has declared Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, a one-day public holiday for both the public and private sectors. When the holiday is combined with the usual Saturday and Sunday weekend, many employees will have an extended three-day weekend on Friday, August 28.

The holiday will continue continuously from Friday, August 28, to Sunday, August 30, following the official announcement. On Monday, August 31, regular business hours will resume nationwide. Although Islamic holiday dates on the Gregorian calendar are still subject to official confirmation and moon sighting, this holiday is applicable to both government and private sector employees. Additionally, it should be noted that several emirates, most notably Sharjah, have different working week and weekend schedules. As a consequence, holiday benefits for certain local institutions may vary depending on their particular work schedules.

Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, which honours the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal through religious discourses, prayers, and community programs, has great religious significance for Muslims all over the world. Residents of the UAE are urged to plan for travel, family get-togethers, and trips to nearby entertainment venues in order to take advantage of this long weekend.
