300MW of Electricity from Rooppur to Join National Grid in October

Technical work is progressing rapidly to supply 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid by October. Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Khodzin said around 4,000 Russian experts and engineers are working to resolve various technical problems at the project.

The ambassador made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with FBCCI Administrator Md. Fazlul Hoque at the FBCCI office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday (September 16). The FBCCI later disclosed details of the meeting in a press release.

The meeting discussed the overall progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and various aspects of project implementation. The ambassador said preparations are underway to begin power generation. The initial target is to connect 300MW of electricity to the national grid.

Meanwhile, the meeting also discussed an initiative to establish a joint “Russia-Bangladesh Business Council” to boost trade, investment and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Russia. Khodzin said the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed interest in forming such a council.

Plans were also announced to organise a “Russia-Bangladesh Business Forum” in Moscow to increase direct contact between businesspeople of the two countries. The forum will provide opportunities for B2B meetings between Bangladeshi and Russian entrepreneurs. An official announcement on the matter may come at the meeting of the two countries’ Intergovernmental Commission scheduled to be held in Dhaka in early November.
