NSI Cracks Down on Fugitive Officers, Heightens Oversight Across Foreign Missions

NSI directors under surveillance

Bangladesh’s National Security Intelligence (NSI) has adopted a firm stance regarding officers posted at foreign diplomatic missions, placing consular and other critical roles under strict surveillance from Dhaka. Authorities have initiated strict measures against personnel who fled their posts, even as allegations surface that opportunistic groups are spreading misinformation to undermine the state agency.

According to reliable NSI sources, two fugitive officers have been dismissed, with disciplinary proceedings pending against two others. Officials involved in irregularities domestically or abroad face firm administrative action; several have been recalled ahead of schedule and placed as Officers on Special Duty (OSD) or under internal investigation.

Sources noted that hostile political factions are resurrecting old allegations on social media to tarnish the agency’s image. The backlash reportedly stems from rigorous NSI investigations that submitted adverse reports on high-level partisan officials and curbed illicit patronage networks, prompting retaliatory propaganda campaigns against the institution.

High-profile desertions include Field Officer Ashraf Hossain from the High Commission in New Delhi last July. Following the political transition on August 5, 2024, Deputy Director Nasir in New Delhi, former BUET Chhatra League President Aminul Haq Palash in Kolkata, and Joint Director Badrul Islam Bidyut in Dubai also fled their posts.

Ashraf Hossain reportedly departed New Delhi under the pretext of traveling home with his family but instead fled to the United States. Deputy Director Nasir has similarly relocated to the US. NSI confirmed that efforts to identify, prosecute, and penalize all personnel involved in abscondence, corruption, or misconduct remain ongoing.
