INDIA Alliance Calls for Protests Amid Crackdown Allegations in Blockaded Delhi

The opposition INDIA alliance has announced a major protest in New Delhi to demand free and fair elections and protect voting rights across the nation. All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary K.C. Venugopal announced in Alappuzha, Kerala, that the upcoming program is part of an ongoing struggle to safeguard the Constitution and the public’s right to vote. He shared that top opposition leaders plan to meet the Chief Justice of India on Monday to convey their concerns regarding the electoral process, following a previous meeting with the President of India.
Mr. Venugopal strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that the ruling leadership is attempting to shield Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar under the guise of security. Claiming that this move could result in political fallout, Mr. Venugopal asserted that Prime Minister Modi is increasingly concerned about the opposition’s sustained demonstrations. However, these remarks remain political allegations by the Congress leader, and official statements from the Central Government and relevant authorities must be weighed separately.
The announcement of these protests follows heightened tensions in the national capital, where stringent security measures were implemented during a separate demonstration by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The CJP protest, which demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, led to traffic restrictions, temporary closures of specific metro station gates, and disruptions to local train services. Police and security forces were heavily deployed across Delhi, though reports regarding the exact deployment figures and the precise number of closed stations varied.
The new wave of demonstrations by the INDIA alliance is primarily driven by strong objections from opposition parties regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Opposition leaders contend that this revision process poses a direct risk to citizen voting rights. However, these allegations require thorough verification alongside formal responses from the Election Commission and the ruling party. Reaffirming their commitment, Mr. Venugopal emphasized that the Congress and the INDIA alliance will relentlessly continue their movement until a transparent and fair electoral process is fully ensured.
