Coal Extraction Resumes at Barapukuria Mine after Two Months

Coal extraction has resumed at Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL), the country’s sole operational coal mine, following a two-month suspension. Overcoming various operational risks and multifaceted challenges, officials and workers successfully restarted mining operations from the newly prepared longwall phase-1405 on Thursday night, October 15.
According to mine sources, an initial volume of 215 metric tons of coal was extracted from the new phase-1405. Full-scale extraction activities from this face are scheduled to begin today, Friday morning. Earlier, coal extraction from the previous face-1309 was completed on August 3, 2026, yielding a total of 415,000 metric tons of coal. Subsequently, mining operations were initiated at the new phase after overcoming several technical and operational hurdles required to set up the face.
Meanwhile, the coal yard at Barapukuria currently holds a stock of 615,000 metric tons of coal. Alongside the existing stockpile, a major portion of the newly mined coal will be utilized by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to generate electricity at the adjacent Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant. The resumption of coal extraction has injected fresh enthusiasm into the mining facility. Speaking on the matter, DGM (Production) of Barapukuria Coal Mine, Iftekharul Islam, informed that full-fledged coal extraction from the new phase would commence on Friday.
