Second Unit’s Uranium Arrives at Rooppur Under Strict Security

Under tight security, the first consignment of uranium fuel for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) has arrived at Ishwardi in Pabna. A convoy of four special lorries carrying the uranium entered the project site at 10:03 AM today, Wednesday, October 21. This marks the beginning of a new phase in the fuel supply operations for the plant’s second unit.

Earlier, at 4:56 AM, the vehicle convoy carrying uranium departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for Ishwardi. The fuel was transported by road under strict escort by various law enforcement agencies, including the Bangladesh Army, SRB, and police. Traffic and pedestrian movements were controlled along the route.

Citing the project and relevant sources, various media outlets reported that this consignment imported from Russia was brought for the second unit. However, the exact arrival time of the shipment in the country and official statements from the concerned department were not immediately available.

Earlier, on October 3, an additional shipment of nuclear fuel for the first unit was transported to Rooppur under tight security. On the other hand, the fuel supply for the second unit is scheduled to continue from October to December. Relevant sources had previously stated a plan to transport the fuel in phases using seven special aircraft.

Once both units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant become operational, the country’s power generation capacity will increase. However, even after the arrival of the fuel, necessary inspections, safety checks, and other technical procedures must be completed according to established protocols.
