Expanding Airspace Over the Bay of Bengal Could Boost Revenue

Expanding the Flight Information Region (FIR) over Bangladesh’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal will significantly increase revenue generated from air navigation services while unlocking new economic prospects in national airspace management. Speakers highlighted these prospects at a discussion organised by the Air Traffic Controllers’ Association of Bangladesh (ATCAB) at the Sky Lounge of the RAOWA Convention Club in Dhaka to mark International Air Traffic Controller Day, celebrated in solidarity with 137 countries worldwide.
Air Commodore Noor-e-Alam, Member (ATM) of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), stated that the FIR expansion process over the country’s EEZ is currently underway, noting that once implemented, ‘this initiative will make airspace management more effective while substantially boosting national revenue from air navigation services.’ Meanwhile, Aero Versatilo Group Chairman and CEO Shafiqul Islam, attending as a special guest, emphasised the professional importance of air traffic controllers in ensuring aviation safety.
ATCAB General Secretary A. T. M. Nazrul Islam highlighted that controllers ensure safe operations through quick decisions, explaining that restructuring the Air Traffic Service (ATS) and FIR through technical evaluations and international coordination will create major opportunities. In his presidential address, ATCAB President M. A. Akkas stressed monitoring occupational health risks, proper shift management, and international-standard training, remarking, ‘Alongside modern technology, a skilled and healthy workforce serves as the core driving force behind safe airspace operations.’
During the discussion, veteran and young air traffic controllers shared their professional experiences and challenges. Towards the end of the program, ATCAB unveiled the cover of its debut magazine, titled ‘Horizons and Beyond.’ The event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting and cultural performances, highlighting the vital role controllers play in generating revenue from aircraft overflights and maintaining smooth aviation operations behind the scenes.
