Bangladesh put up a spirited fight against India, overcoming their opponents’ physical advantage to compete on equal terms, particularly during the opening 10 minutes. However, Ana Alonso Fraguas’s side ultimately failed to secure the title in the Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy, as India emerged champions.

India defeated Bangladesh 28–16 in the final of the four-nation women’s handball tournament at the Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in Paltan on Thursday. India secured the title unbeaten, having won all their matches in the competition. Bangladesh suffered defeats only against India, losing to them in both the league stage and the final. Bangladesh had defeated the other two participating teams, Nepal and the Maldives, in the league stage.

Bangladesh competed strongly from the outset. India led 14–9 at half-time, but the gap widened as the match progressed in the second half. Bangladesh’s late attempts to fight back proved unsuccessful. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Sakiba, Nishi and their teammates failed to convert them into goals.

Indian goalkeeper Diksha Kumari repeatedly denied Bangladesh’s attacks with a series of outstanding saves. Her remarkable performance earned her the Player of the Match award. Meanwhile, India’s Bhawana Sharma was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Earlier, Nepal secured the bronze medal in the Begum Khaleda Zia IHF Nations Trophy by defeating the Maldives on Wednesday.

Following the final, a cultural programme was held. State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, MP, presented the prizes to the winners as the chief guest. Bangladesh Handball Federation President Major General Abu Mohammad Sarwar Farid, General Secretary Salahuddin Ahmed and Tournament Committee Coordinator SM Khalekuzzaman Swapan were also present.
