Japan’s Unusual Underwater Postbox

Japan has amazed visitors with an unusual postbox installed deep beneath the sea that remains in operation. Located about 10 metres underwater off the coast of Susami, the underwater postbox continues to attract scuba divers from around the world.
The postbox was installed in 1999 to promote local tourism and a diving festival. It later entered the Guinness World Records as the world’s deepest underwater postbox.
To send letters, divers write messages on special waterproof postcards using oil-based markers. They then dive underwater and place the postcards in the postbox themselves.
Local postal workers regularly dive down to collect the postcards and arrange for their delivery to recipients.
Even in the digital age, the thrill of sending a handwritten message from beneath the sea to someone far away remains popular.
