Tarique Rahman Set to Return Tonight, Ending Japan Tour

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is returning to Dhaka tonight following a highly successful four-day official visit to Japan that significantly reinforced the economic and strategic partnership between the two nations. Flying on a special VVIP Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10:30 PM, the PM completed a packed itinerary aimed at expanding bilateral trade, enhancing regional security, and attracting robust foreign direct investment to Bangladesh.
The cornerstone of the tour was a bilateral summit with Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi on October 27, where both leaders reviewed the existing strategic partnership and issued a joint statement focusing on trade, investment, and maritime safety. During the trip, Japan pledged assistance for two major loan projects totaling nearly $2.95 billion to upgrade Bangladesh’s development and investment infrastructure, alongside an agreement for a 2.12 billion yen grant to acquire a patrol vessel for maritime security.
In a landmark projection, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Japanese private-sector investment in Bangladesh is expected to hit 1 trillion yen over the next five years, which could generate around 200,000 local employment opportunities. Addressing the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Forum dialogue in Tokyo, PM Tarique Rahman assured Japanese executives that operational challenges in energy, customs, and taxation would be resolved swiftly, urging investment in sectors like automobile manufacturing, high-speed rail, technology, aerospace, and logistics.
The high-profile delegation, which included the PM’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, along with cabinet ministers and senior officials, oversaw the signing of six key bilateral cooperation instruments spanning climate change, employment, agriculture, and business environment improvements. Before his departure, PM Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy call on His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, visited Toyota’s manufacturing facilities in Nagoya, and joined a civic reception hosted by the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Tokyo.
