Iran to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Only Upon Acceptance of 7 Demands

Iran could potentially reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States accepts seven conditions laid out by Tehran, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who confirmed that discussions are underway with mediators regarding a two-day plan to restart the critical waterway. Mr. Araghchi stated that Tehran is currently holding talks with Qatari mediators. According to his statement, negotiations are focusing on implementing the preconditions previously set by Iran for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and initiating peace talks.

Meanwhile, Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei claimed he read a letter sent by US Vice President JD Vance, stating that it hints at a major shift in Washington’s stance. Mr. Rezaei noted this shift as a positive sign. Earlier in September, Tehran presented several conditions to the United States. Iran’s demands include the lifting of US sanctions imposed following the collapse of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a reduction of the US military presence in the Middle East, and the reinstatement of oil export waivers granted as part of the June agreement.

Additionally, Tehran has demanded the release of all frozen Iranian funds and assets held in various countries, including Qatar. Their conditions also call for the official recognition of a new shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz designated by Iran and Oman, along with the closure of alternative paths. Furthermore, Iran has demanded a complete cessation of hostilities on all fronts, emphasizing that Israeli attacks in Lebanon must stop entirely. Tehran’s demands also encompass lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, halting American interference in its internal affairs, and ending Washington’s cooperation with anti-Iranian groups.

Although discussions regarding these conditions are ongoing through mediators, there is no confirmation that the United States has accepted them. Consequently, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the commencement of peace talks between the two nations remain uncertain.
