Five Wickets in Four Tests, Bangladesh May Drop Taijul

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has expressed serious concern over left-arm spinner Taijul Islam’s recent dip in wicket-taking form and shoulder injury, hinting that the team might drop their highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for the second and final Test against the West Indies in Sylhet. Following an eight-wicket defeat in the Dhaka opener, Mr. Simmons noted, ‘It is a matter of great concern. He is one of our primary spinners. Discussing his form with him makes it clear that it is troubling both him and the team.’

Mr. Simmons also voiced deep frustration over the team’s ongoing batting struggles across formats since their victory in Darwin last August. Addressing the failure to translate intense training into match performances, he remarked, ‘We have not batted well since Darwin. The boys are working just as hard in training. Yet, that preparation is not translating into match performances. We must return to that stage where our training efforts reflect in our on-field play.’

Compounding their woes, Bangladesh lost 16 wickets to West Indian spinners in Dhaka. Highlighting the need to improve against slow bowling, Mr. Simmons stated, ‘We take responsibility for our batting. They bowled well, which is part of Test cricket. However, we need to do much better across the board, whether batting against opposing spinners, scoring runs, or playing defensively.’

To bolster the batting lineup, captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto will bat at number three, replacing the injured Mominul Haque, while experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim returns from a finger injury. Domestic star Amite Hasan has also been added to the squad, with Mr. Simmons noting regarding his potential debut, ‘The way he is playing in domestic cricket, he needs to perform the same way if he gets an opportunity in the national team.’
