Slander and Propaganda: Their Harmful Impacts on Individuals, Families, and Society

Human dignity is rooted in honesty, morality, and humane behavior rather than wealth or status, yet slander, propaganda, backbiting, and character assassination severely undermine it. A false accusation can destroy a person’s reputation, relationships, and long-standing achievements. While slander involves false accusations and disinformation spreads distorted information, discussing someone’s faults in their absence constitutes backbiting. However, evidence-based criticism, reporting corruption, and publishing the truth in the public interest are permissible when verified for accuracy, proper purpose, and necessity, while strictly respecting privacy rights.

Innocent victims of slander often suffer from diminished self-esteem, psychological stress, and compromised social security. Within families, gossip creates distance among relatives, while in society, unverified allegations destroy trust, harmony, and justice. Proclaiming someone guilty before any offense is proven remains entirely unjustifiable. The Holy Quran places special emphasis on verification, with Surah Al-Hujurat instructing believers to investigate news to prevent harming others out of ignorance, and forbidding mockery, suspicion, and backbiting.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized these principles, stating in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 2589) that discussing someone’s traits in their absence is backbiting and attributing false faults is slander. He further noted that broadcasting everything one hears is sufficient to make a person a liar, and urged believers to speak good things or remain silent. These teachings carry profound significance in the digital age, where social media allows unverified information to reach countless people instantly, making it nearly impossible to erase later.

Before sharing any post, image, or complaint online, individuals must verify its source, context, and authenticity while protecting personal data such as phone numbers, addresses, and medical information. When targeted by online harassment, victims should avoid retaliation, preserve evidence, report accounts, and seek legal assistance when necessary. If misinformation is disseminated, the affected party must receive a formal correction and public apology, ensuring justice is pursued through lawful processes rather than revenge.

Ultimately, open family discussions, evidence-based public discourse, and religious practice reinforce morality, restraint, and human dignity. Before sharing any information, individuals must evaluate whether it is true, evidence-based, necessary, and free from harm or privacy violations. History shows that truth prevails not through humiliation or disinformation, but through evidence, honesty, justice, and responsibility. Let our collective pledge remain focused on truth rather than slander, justice rather than vengeance, and vigilance over negligence.
