Hasan’s Historic World Record: Five Wickets Across Five Different Countries

In just two and a half years and 19 Test matches, Bangladeshi pace sensation Hasan Mahmud has etched his name into red-ball cricket’s 149-year history. The 27-year-old pacer claimed his fifth five-wicket haul in the ongoing Sylhet Test against the West Indies, registering six for 90 in 24 overs. This milestone makes him the first fast bowler in cricket history, and only the second bowler overall after Australia’s Nathan Lyon, to claim his first five Test fifers across five distinct foreign nations.
Hasan’s remarkable overseas streak began in August 2024 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, followed by a second fifer in September against India in Chennai. He added a third last August during a historic victory in Darwin, Australia, and a fourth last month in the United Arab Emirates, where he claimed five wickets alongside a historic hat-trick against Afghanistan. His latest performance in Sylhet marks his first five-wicket haul on home soil and his third of the current calendar year.
Surpassing all Bangladeshi pacers, Hasan now holds the absolute summit for the most five-wicket hauls in the nation’s Test history. With just 19 matches played, he has left behind Shahadat Hossain, who secured four fifers across a 38-Test career. Other national fast bowlers such as Taskin Ahmed, Robiul Islam, and Nahid Islam have also recorded multiple fifers, but none have matched Hasan’s extraordinary international consistency and rapid ascension.
During the second day of the Sylhet Test, Hasan capitalized on the second new ball taken by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. Striking in his very first over, he bowled Amir Jangoo with an incoming delivery and dismissed Caribbean captain Roston Chase on the very next ball. He later claimed his fifth victim when wicketkeeper Litton Das stumped Joshua Bishop, and swiftly added a sixth scalp by bowling Shamar Joseph at the start of the second session.
This stellar performance marks the second time Hasan has claimed six wickets in a Test innings, a feat no other Bangladeshi pace bowler has achieved more than once. Unquestionably cementing his status as Bangladesh’s premier pace bowler, Hasan continues to dismantle opposing batting lineups with fiery spells. His historic consistency underscores a defining era for Bangladesh’s fast-bowling department in international cricket.
