Forlán Appointed Head Coach of Uruguay

Under the renowned striker Diego Forlán, Uruguay begins a new era. The former standout forward has been named head coach of both the senior and under-20 national teams by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF). The 47-year-old Forrés instantly takes over as Marcelo Bielsa’s successor and begins his job with the U-20 team.

Forlán was praised by the AUF as a legendary character who will use his leadership and extensive expertise to rebuild the national squad. After a disappointing World Cup campaign in which the two-time champions were eliminated in the group stage, Uruguay sought a new coach, and Bielsa left when his contract expired.

Forlán gained 112 caps for Uruguay during his playing career. He was instrumental in their 2011 Copa América victory and won the Golden Ball after scoring five goals at the 2010 World Cup. During his club career, he played for Inter Milan, Manchester United, and Atletico Madrid. Forrés led Peñarol and Atenas after retiring in 2019, and he now has the most difficult task of guiding his nation.
