Kusal Mendis Leads Newly Formed Sri Lanka Cricket Organization

Sri Lanka has officially launched its first organization for professional cricketers, the Sri Lanka Professional Cricketers Association (SLPCA). National Test captain Mr. Kusal Mendis has been named its first president.

Sri Lanka has played first-class cricket for 100 years and gained Test status in 1981. However, it had no board-recognized body representing active professional cricketers. The SLPCA was formed to provide players with an independent and collective platform. The association said its formation is an important step in the ongoing reform and modernization of Sri Lankan cricket. It aims to give players a stronger voice and help build a more modern and cooperative cricket structure.

Men’s star Mr. Wanindu Hasaranga, women’s captain Ms. Chamari Athapaththu and several other leading players played key roles in forming the SLPCA. For the first time, women’s cricket has equal representation in Sri Lanka’s cricket union structure. The SLPCA will represent both men’s and women’s national teams and address disputes between players and Sri Lanka Cricket, including recent issues over IPL no-objection certificates and fitness tests.
