Trump warns Oman of attack over Hormuz
The 60-day period set for a bilateral ceasefire and peace talks between the United States and Iran has ended without any specific agreement. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has issued a stern military threat against Oman, warning that the country would face a devastating attack if it obstructs US interests or Middle East-related issues in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. In an exclusive interview with Fox News host Trey Yingst, President Trump said in unusually harsh language, “If Oman gets in our way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them.”
Earlier in June, a 60-day deadline had been set to ease military tensions between the United States and Iran and seek a path to peace. The deadline ended on Monday, but no outline for ending the conflict was announced even on the final day. Meanwhile, Iran said its talks with Oman on the overall situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and transit issues remain complicated but are continuing. This is not the first time Trump has issued an apparent threat against Oman, a longtime US ally. At a cabinet meeting in May, Trump had also expressed anger, saying, “Oman has to be treated like everybody else, or we have to blow them up.”
In the same interview, Trump confirmed that his administration had established a direct secret backchannel with Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, he said he was in no hurry to sign an agreement. Addressing Iran, he said, “They’re pretty good poker players, but they’re running out.” He added that he had no set timetable and was not in any hurry.
