Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir becomes the 23rd President of the country
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP candidate, received 255 votes to become the nation’s 23rd president. Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmad, a candidate from the 11-party coalition headed by Jamaat-e-Islami, was his opponent and received 88 votes.
On Thursday, August 20, voting in the Jatiya Sangsad started about 2:00 PM and ended at 5:00 PM. This was the first election of its kind in Parliament in 35 long years. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin conducted the poll, and of the 349 members of parliament who cast ballots, six abstained.
