Thakurgaon-1: Presidential Seat Declared Vacant

The Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat has been formally declared vacant by the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as the country’s president. He took the nation’s highest constitutional position on Friday, August 21, and a gazette notice published on Saturday, August 22, affirmed that the decision is effective as of that date.

The announcement, which was signed by Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, Secretary of the Legislative Support Wing (Lawmaking Branch-2) at the Parliament Secretariat, refers to Article 50(4) of the Bangladeshi Constitution. This constitutional clause states that when a member of parliament takes on the role of president, their seat immediately becomes vacant.

The announcement should be published right away in an exceptional edition of the Bangladesh Gazette, according to the Secretariat’s directive to the Bangladesh Government Press. To start the process of holding a by-election in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, copies have also been sent to important state offices, such as the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet Secretary, and the Speaker and Leader of the Opposition offices.
