Regarding severing ties with an elder brother involved in unlawful activities

Mr. Abdullah Muhammad, via email
Question: Is it acceptable to cut relations with an older brother who engages in illegal (haram) activities?
Answer: No, it is not allowed. One must try to rehabilitate him politely while respecting his dignity. However, breaking off or ruining relationships is prohibited as it is another illegal conduct. A prohibited act cannot be made right by another prohibited conduct; instead, outreach (da’wah), prayer (dua), and affection are used. You are not responsible if this doesn’t function either.
Respondent: Allama Mufti Obaidur Rahman Khan Nadvi.
