Nazrul’s 50th death anniversary observed through various programmes
The 50th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed through various programmes. On the occasion, Dhaka University authorities, teachers, students, officials and employees, as well as leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Dhaka University unit, separately placed floral wreaths at the poet’s grave and paid tribute on Thursday morning.
In the morning, teachers, students, officials and employees of Dhaka University, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, placed floral wreaths at the poet’s grave and offered Fateha. Later, a discussion was held at the open stage on the grave premises, with the vice-chancellor in the chair. Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Almojadeddie Alfesani addressed the event as special guests. Director of the Nazrul Research Centre Professor Dr. Tariq Manzur delivered the memorial lecture. Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam (Siraj Salequin), chairman of the Department of Bangla, moderated the programme.
The university proctor, provosts of various halls, acting registrar and National Poet’s granddaughter Khilkhil Kazi were present on the occasion. In his speech, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam said Nazrul’s life and literary works teach people to protest against injustice and raise their voices against discrimination, wrongdoing, oppression and persecution in society. His literary works also teach people to maintain mutual unity while upholding equality, harmony and peace. He called upon everyone to draw lessons from Nazrul’s life and literature and become inspired by patriotism, compassion for people, and moral and human values.
On the occasion of the National Poet’s death anniversary, a Quran Khatm was also held after Fajr prayers at Dhaka University Central Mosque, Masjidul Jami‘a. Later, teachers and students of the Department of Music performed Nazrul songs. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Dhaka University unit, paid tribute at the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the occasion of his 50th death anniversary. Leaders and activists of the organisation placed a floral wreath at the poet’s grave on Thursday morning.
BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Mr. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dhaka University Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas, General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, and leaders and activists at the university and hall levels were present. After paying tribute, Mr. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was one of the major sources of inspiration for various movements and struggles, from the independence movement of Bangladesh to the mass uprising of 2024. Nazrul spoke against injustice throughout his life. His literature and philosophy inspired people to protest against oppression and persecution and to participate in movements and struggles. He further said Nazrul’s ideals and words inspired people from the independence movement to the mass uprising of 2024. If there is any conspiracy against the country’s sovereignty, Nazrul’s spirit inspires people to stand up against it.
Dhaka University Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas said embracing Nazrul’s ideals of equality, humanity, harmony and patriotism and building a beautiful, humane and discrimination-free society would be the best tribute to the poet. His literature and philosophy have enriched the secular consciousness, equality and human values of the Bengali people. Nazrul’s ideals inspire the new generation to raise their voices against injustice, discrimination and inequality.
