Iran Seeks to Normalize Ties with Qatar, ‘Putting Bitterness Behind’

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed interest in restoring an atmosphere of cooperation with Qatar by overcoming recent tensions and strains in bilateral relations. At a meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, he stressed the importance of normalizing relations between the two countries. Anadolu Agency reported the development, citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

At the meeting, Mr. Pezeshkian said all legal rights of the Iranian people must be recognized. He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks nothing beyond its legal rights and will not bow to any pressure or threats.

The Iranian president said Iran and Qatar had previously planned several joint initiatives. However, the implementation of those agreements was delayed because of the war, while the development of bilateral relations was also hampered.

Mr. Pezeshkian further alleged that Israel does not want close relations and cooperation to develop among Muslim countries. In his view, mutual cooperation and coordination among regional countries need to be strengthened.

He expressed hope that Iran and Qatar would be able to strengthen mutual cooperation again after overcoming the recent tensions and difficult circumstances. He also hoped that opportunities would emerge to revive the two countries’ previous joint initiatives.

Despite strains in bilateral relations, Tehran has emphasized maintaining communication with Qatar. Mr. Pezeshkian’s latest remarks made clear Iran’s interest in bringing the relationship back to an active and cooperative track.

Amid recent conflicts and regional tensions in the Middle East, relations between Iran and Qatar have also come under pressure at various times. In this context, efforts to increase bilateral communication and cooperation are being viewed as important for regional stability as well.
