Proposal for Holding World Ijtema in Two Phases in January

Although official confirmation is still pending, the first phase of the World Ijtema is scheduled for January 8–10, while the second phase is scheduled for January 15–17. This preliminary schedule was announced on Thursday by Home Minister Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed after a detailed discussion with Maulana Saad representatives. The administration is currently cooperating with both groups to organize safe arrangements, he stated, adding that the main Islamic gathering was unable to take place last year due to national election obligations.

The two main parties attending the scheduled discussions have different preferences. In January, Maulana Zubair’s followers have strongly defended the traditional two-phase system. On the other hand, followers of Maulana Saad strongly opposed the idea of shifting the event from its traditional location in Tongi, suggesting instead that it be scheduled in late November or in the time preceding Ramadan.

Government officials highlight that ensuring public safety and avoiding violence are the absolute top concerns for the upcoming event. Before deciding on the exact dates, officials carefully engaged intelligence services because previous conflicts between the groups caused tragic losses. The Home Minister also made it clear that the Ministry of Religious Affairs will evaluate security clearances and visa requirements before making a decision about Maulana Saad’s probable entry into the country.
