Fish and Egg Prices Surge as Vegetables Remain Costly

The prices of fish, chicken and eggs are still high in the capital’s markets. Although the prices of vegetables have stabilized, their prices are not comfortable for the common people. All in all, it can be said that the daily necessities market is still not comfortable. For the past two weeks or more, eggs, chicken and fish have been sold at quite high prices in most markets in the capital. The prices of vegetables have decreased slightly from the previous week and are stable. Even then, most vegetables are being sold at 60 to 70 taka per kg. This was seen in various markets in the capital yesterday.

In the capital’s market, gourds are sold at 60 to 70 taka per type, per kg of patal 60 taka, papaya 30 to 40 taka, wax gourds 50 taka, brinjals 100 to 120 taka depending on size and type, local cucumber 80 taka, hybrid cucumber 50 taka, bitter gourd 80 taka, Ocra 80 taka, kachur mukhi 70 taka,teasle gourd 60 taka, yeardlong beans 100 to 120 taka, capsicum 300 taka, dhundul 80 taka, jhinga 60 taka, chichinga 50 to 60 taka, carrots 140 taka, radish 60 taka, tomatoes 120 taka and sweet pumpkin 50 taka. Red spinach is sold at 15 to 20 taka, water spinach 15 taka, malabar spinach 30 taka, bottle gourd greens 30 taka and spinach 30 taka.

Hilsa weighing one kilogram or more is sold at Tk 2,600 to Tk 2,800 in the market. Medium-sized hilsa is being sold at Tk 1,500 per kilogram and small hilsa at Tk 800. Rui and Katal (depending on size) are being sold at Tk 360 to 400 per kilogram, grass carp at Tk 300, silver carp at Tk 220 to 300, pangasius at Tk 220 to 250, poa at Tk 500, pabda at Tk 450 to 500, tengra at Tk 700, baim at Tk 800, bele at Tk 900, small shrimp at Tk 900, big shrimp at Tk 1,500, and boal at Tk 800 per kilogram.

Onion is being sold at 50 taka per kilogram, garlic at 120 taka, ginger at 180 taka and potatoes at 25 to 30 taka. Soybean oil has been reduced from the market due to the announcement of a price hike. It is not available in most shops in the capital. When asked about the reason for the unavailability, several shopkeepers said that the company is not supplying the oil. Where it is available, soybean oil is being sold at the previous price of 200 taka per liter. However, soybean is available in supermarkets. Palm oil is being sold at 195 taka per liter.

Beef is being sold at Tk 780 to 800 per kg and mutton at Tk 1,250 to 1,280. Broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 200 per kg, layer chicken at Tk 360 and golden cock chicken at Tk 330 per kg. Abed Ahmed, a shopper at the capital’s Shantinagar market, expressed his anger and said, “When the price of a product increases once, will it ever decrease again?” The prices of one or two products may have decreased slightly, but 99 percent of products are stuck at their previous high prices. The excuses to increase the price of soybean oil have started again. In fact, it seems that there is no one to supervise the market. Traders increase and decrease everything according to their own will.
