Chargesheets Filed Against Hasina and 62 Others in Two Jatrabari Cases
Police have submitted chargesheets to the court against 63 people, including ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in two cases over deaths and injuries in the capital’s Jatrabari area during the July Mass Uprising.
In the attempted murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station over the attack on Nadim, the investigation officer, SI Ibrahim Khalil, submitted a chargesheet against 30 people, including Sheikh Hasina, to the court on July 27. He has recommended that 66 people be discharged from the case as no involvement was found.
Besides Sheikh Hasina, the accused in the case include former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DB chief of Dhaka Harun Or Rashid, former DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, and former Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain.
According to the first information report (FIR), Tolaram College students Mehedi Hasan Prantho and Nadim were participating in the anti-discrimination movement at the Rayarbagh bus stand area under Jatrabari Police Station on July 19, 2024. At that time, protesters came under attack and gunfire. A bullet entered Prantho’s chin and exited through the back of his head. Nadim was shot in the left knee, and the bullet passed through his knee. Prantho was rescued and taken to Salman Hospital and Diagnostic Limited in Jatrabari, where doctors declared him dead. Nadim recovered after receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, SI Mahmudul Hasan Irfan of Jatrabari Police Station submitted a chargesheet against 33 people, including Sheikh Hasina, on August 13 in the murder case of construction worker Md Babul Mridha during the July movement. He has recommended that 39 people be discharged from the case as no involvement in the crime was found.
Besides Sheikh Hasina, the accused in the case include former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, former Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former Jatrabari-5 lawmaker Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, former Patuakhali-3 lawmaker SM Shahzada, former Pirojpur-2 lawmaker Mohiuddin Maharaj, former Barishal-4 lawmaker Pankaj Nath, and former Barishal City Corporation Mayor Sadik Abdullah.
Also among the accused are former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Dhaka South unit President of Swechhasebak League Kamrul Hasan Ripon, Jatrabari Thana Awami League General Secretary Harunur Rashid Munna, former Bhandaria Upazila Parishad Chairman Mirazul Islam Miraz, and Dhaka South Chhatra League General Secretary Sajal Kundu.
The case alleges that on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, Babul Mridha left home to look for his son, Abu Taleb, who had taken part in the protests in the Dania and Lucky Community Centre areas of Jatrabari. When he reached the Lucky Community Centre area, he was shot. Local people rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After receiving treatment there for about a month, he was taken to the BGB Hospital. He was later transferred to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on August 22.
Babul Mridha died while undergoing treatment at CMH on September 9, 2024, 52 days after being shot.
