Malaysia PM Says Pakistan Not Involved in Terrorism While in India
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has rejected India’s claim that Pakistan was responsible for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. He said he had no intelligence or assessment indicating that terrorism had been carried out with state sponsorship from Pakistan.
During an interview with Indian broadcaster NDTV on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Anwar Ibrahim was asked about the 2025 Pahalgam attack and Pakistan’s alleged involvement. He was also asked whether he considered Pakistan’s alleged role as “state terrorism.”
In response, the Malaysian prime minister said, “I do not want to go that far. I know this is extremely sensitive to say in India. But of course, I am a close friend of Modi. We have also engaged with the Pakistanis and felt that these problems can be resolved.”
Asked why he was not criticising Pakistan over terrorism, Anwar said Pakistan’s responsibility first needed to be conclusively established.
He said, “It has to be established first. I am not saying that no terrorist activities have taken place. But responsibility has to be determined with certainty. Based on the communication between our intelligence agencies and India, no information has been found that would indicate that terrorism was carried out with state sponsorship there.”
In April 2025, 26 people were killed in a devastating attack in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. India immediately blamed Pakistan for the attack, but Islamabad rejected the allegation.
The attack led to a sharp escalation of tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, India and Pakistan. India subsequently carried out military strikes on Pakistani territory.
Pakistan responded with military action of its own. After 88 hours of conflict between the two countries, a ceasefire eventually came into effect.
