Court in Tripura Jails Five Bangladeshi Nationals for Two Years
A court in Unakoti district, Tripura, has sentenced five Bangladeshi nationals, including a couple, to two years of rigorous imprisonment. Police said the sentences came in two separate cases. The cases involved illegal entry into India along with violations of passport and foreigner registration laws. Hindustan Times first reported the news.
Police officials said three of the convicted persons are Mr. Imran Hossain, Mr. Arman Hossain, and Mr. Monir Hossain. All three are residents of Cumilla district in Bangladesh. Police arrested them along with two Indian agents near the Paiturbazar motor stand in Kailashahar, Unakoti district.
During questioning, police learned that the men entered Indian territory on February 1 this year. They crossed through the Rangauti border under Irani police station in Kailashahar. Indian agents helped them cross the border. Officials said the men carried no valid documents when they entered the state.
The court sentenced them to two years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also fined each person 10,000 taka. Non payment of the fine means an additional two months in jail. The court convicted them under Sections 21 and 23 of the Foreigners Act. It also applied other relevant sections of the Indian Nyaya Sanhita.
In a separate case, police arrested a couple along with a minor child on June 10 last year. The arrest took place in a newly built structure in Kailashahar. Police identified the couple as Ms. Shiuli Begum and Mr. Shahid Sheikh. Both are residents of Rangpur district in Bangladesh.
During questioning, the couple admitted they had entered India illegally. They said they were trying to return to Bangladesh when police caught them.
After the trial, the court found the couple guilty. It sentenced them to two years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also fined each of them 10,000 taka, with an additional two months in jail for non payment. The court convicted them under Section 3 of the IPP Act and Section 14(A)(B) of the Foreigners Act.
