Former Chattogram-3 MP Mahfuzur Rahman Mita Arrested in Gulshan
Former Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) lawmaker Mahfuzur Rahman Mita has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Gulshan in the capital. He was arrested during a raid on a house on Road 43 in Gulshan-2 at around 1:30am on Tuesday.
DB Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner AFM Anwar Hossain Khan confirmed the arrest on Tuesday. He said a DB team conducted the raid at House No. 29 on Road 43 in Gulshan-2 based on confidential information. Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, a former lawmaker of the activities-banned Awami League, was arrested from the house.
After his arrest,Mr. Mita was taken to the DB office on Minto Road. The DB official said further legal action against him is under process. However, no immediate details were provided about the specific case in which he was arrested.
According to DB sources,Mr. Mita is an accused named in the first information reports (FIRs) of several cases filed with Sandwip Police Station in Chattogram. Relevant authorities may therefore take further legal action against him in connection with one of those cases.
Earlier, on February 18 this year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Mahfuzur Rahman Mita over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income. The case alleged that he had acquired around Tk 9.88 crore in assets beyond his known income.
The ACC found information about assets worth Tk 10.63 crore in his name. However, after excluding expenses and considering his legitimate savings, the commission found that a significant portion of the assets could not be matched with legitimate sources of income, according to the case statement.
The period covered by the ACC case was from 2002 to June 30, 2024. The commission said the case was filed after reviewing income tax records, asset statements and various financial documents. However, there is no information that the allegations in the ACC case have been proven in court. The matter remains under investigation as part of the legal process.
Mahfuzur Rahman Mita was elected as a lawmaker from Chattogram-3 in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 national elections. In the 11th Parliament, he served as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Shipping.
