Two Liver Transplants Planned Monthly at BMU, Cost One Third of India’s

Bangladesh Medical University’s (BMU) Super Specialized Hospital has completed six liver transplants. VC Professor Dr. F M Siddiqui shared this information and said the hospital now plans to perform two liver transplants every month. He gave this update yesterday, Tuesday, at a press conference held in the lecture room of the Super Specialized Hospital.

Mr. Siddiqui said these surgeries cost one third less than similar surgeries in neighboring countries. He called this a clear example of success in the country’s medical system. He added that the cost will fall further in the future.

The government paid for all surgeries done so far, Mr. Siddiqui said. He confirmed that the government will continue to fund these surgeries free of charge until 2027. Sharing details of the six successful liver transplants, he said doctors are now selecting and preparing four more patients for surgery.

The hospital plans to perform two liver transplants each month from now on. It aims to complete twenty four such surgeries every year. Mr. Siddiqui compared this cost to India’s rates and said the hospital completes successful surgeries at less than half that cost. He noted that surgeries in neighboring countries can cost close to one crore taka in total, while at BMU the same surgery costs only thirty to thirty five lakh taka.

Doctors performed the first two of the six earlier transplants on September 1 and 2, 2025. They completed the remaining four this year, on July 3 and 4 and on September 11 and 12. The university’s Liver Transplant Clinic currently provides follow up care to these patients.

BMU performed one liver transplant each in 2019 and 2023, but the program did not continue regularly after that. Since April this year, the hospital adopted a new work plan and began performing liver transplants on a regular basis. Doctors are now preparing to perform two more liver transplants between October 10 and 12. Four patients have already been prepared for these surgeries.

BMU stated that nineteen specialized departments of the university took part in the six liver transplants. A team of experts from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Hyderabad, India, provided technical support for these surgeries. Ms. Jotsna Begum, a homemaker who recently had a successful liver transplant, is now living a healthy life. Her son, Mr. Md. Sajjad, donated the liver for her surgery.

Speaking about the surgery, Mr. Sajjad said he could not believe it was possible in Bangladesh even after the operation succeeded. He said his mother now lives a very healthy life. He explained that the family had to stay at the hospital for almost a month for the operation. He added that many people speak negatively about Bangladesh’s medical system, but after this surgery he realized the country’s medical system has advanced a great deal.

Several officials attended the press conference. They included Professor Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, director of the Super Specialized Hospital, liver transplant surgeon Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das, BMU Professor Dr. Saif Uddin Ahmed, and Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, along with other members of the transplant committee.
