Bangladesh Bank Governor Urges India to Increase Imports from Bangladesh

Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has urged India to increase imports from Bangladesh to improve the trade balance between the two countries. He also stressed expanding the use of Bangla QR, cross-border digital payments, and Indian investment in the technology and industrial sectors.
The governor discussed these issues during a courtesy meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters on Tuesday.
The meeting discussed various aspects of strengthening bilateral economic, trade and financial relations between Bangladesh and India. According to Bangladesh Bank, the discussions covered the two countries’ trade relations as well as cross-border financial transactions and investment. The governor highlighted the need to increase India’s imports from Bangladesh to improve the trade balance.
During the meeting, the governor expressed interest in further expanding the use of Bangla QR. They also discussed India’s experience and possible technical cooperation in launching or expanding cross-border digital payment systems between the two countries.
The Indian high commissioner stressed the need to make foreign investment easier in Bangladesh. In response, the governor said Bangladesh Bank has already taken several investment-friendly policy initiatives to attract foreign investment. As a result of these initiatives, foreign investors will be able to repatriate their invested capital and earned profits to their home countries more easily.
The Bangladesh Bank governor also called for increased Indian investment in technology-driven, production-oriented and industrial sectors.
Deputy High Commissioner Pavan Kumar Badhe and Second Secretary (Economic and Commerce) Gaurav Kumar Agarwal were present with the Indian high commissioner at the meeting. Deputy Governor Dr Md Habibur Rahman and Deputy Governor Md Sarwar Hossain attended the meeting with the Bangladesh Bank governor.
