Canada Announces $100M Aid Package for Palestine
Canada has announced a new aid package of 100 million Canadian dollars for the people of Palestine in Gaza and the West Bank. Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Mark Carney made the announcement on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
Out of the announced amount, 80 million Canadian dollars will be allocated for humanitarian assistance. The remaining 20 million dollars will support development and security-related initiatives. This includes additional funding for Canada’s long-standing program to train Palestinian police in the West Bank. Mr. Carney also expressed readiness to extend similar training programs to Gaza once the security situation improves.
Mr. Carney stated that Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing immense humanitarian suffering. At the same time, he acknowledged the security threats faced by Israelis from Hamas, Iran, and their proxies. He noted that the objective of Canada’s new assistance is to preserve the viability of a two-state solution.
Canada stated that since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023, its total aid commitment to Palestinian civilians has surpassed 600 million Canadian dollars. Earlier in June, Canada had pledged an additional 100 million Canadian dollars in international assistance for Palestine. A major portion of that funding was designated for emergency medical care, food, water, sanitation, shelter, and protection efforts.
