Suranjana Emerges as a New Eco-Tourism Destination in Barguna

Surrounded by greenery, the Bishkhali River and the sounds of birds, Suranjana Tourism Eco Park has emerged as a promising eco-tourism destination on the western edge of Barguna town. The park was established in 2020 through the personal initiative of journalist and lawyer Sohel Hafiz. It aims to promote tourism while protecting the natural environment. The park has more than 1,000 native fruit trees of around 50 species, along with golpata, hogla, reeds and other vegetation. An initiative is also underway to develop a bird sanctuary and a tree rehabilitation centre.

Sohel Hafiz said, “Suranjana is not just a resort to me. It is a small door for people to return to nature. I want people to leave here not only with enjoyment but also with a lesson in loving nature.” The park has six cottages with air-conditioned and basic facilities for overnight stays. It also has an auditorium called ‘Gangchil’, which hosts meetings, training programmes, seminars, weddings, birthdays and other events.

Visitor numbers rise during holidays, Eid and festivals. Families and tourists can spend time beside the river and enjoy the natural surroundings. Sohel Hafiz said, “The nature of our Barguna is no less than anyone else’s. We have rivers, the sea, forests, birds and biodiversity. All we need is to connect nature with tourism without harming it. Suranjana is a small part of that bigger dream.”

Barguna Press Club General Secretary and Channel 24 and Daily Samakal correspondent Abu Zafar Md Saleh said the district has strong tourism potential due to its rivers, coastal areas, biodiversity and proximity to the Sundarbans. He stressed the need for better infrastructure, communication, tourist safety, government support and environmental protection. With proper planning and conservation, Suranjana could become a notable eco-tourism destination while creating local employment and supporting the regional economy.
