Administration Removes Roadside Garbage Dump in Tarakanda After Inqilab Report

The upazila administration removed a large garbage dump beside a regional road in Tarakanda, Mymensingh, on Monday night, just hours after a report was published on the online edition of Daily Inqilab at noon on October 12.
Acting on the instructions of Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Md Saifur Rahman, the administration launched a nighttime operation to clear the accumulated waste. The move brought relief to local residents and pedestrians.
Earlier, Inqilab Online published a detailed report titled “Anger Over Administrative Silence as Roadside Garbage Dump Pollutes the Rangsa River in Tarakanda”. The report highlighted how large quantities of polythene and plastic waste from Tarakanda market had been dumped beside the Mymensingh–Haluaghat regional road, raising concerns that the waste could spread into the Rangsa River.
The report caught the attention of Deputy Commissioner Md Saifur Rahman, who directed the upazila administration to take prompt action. Cleaners and the necessary equipment were deployed that night to remove the waste from the roadside.
Local residents said the long-standing dumping had caused foul smells and created unhygienic conditions. People living near the river were also concerned that rainwater could wash polythene and other waste into the Rangsa River. Following the cleanup, the area became noticeably cleaner.
Local resident Musa Mia said, “Garbage had been dumped here for a long time. We were frustrated by the situation. We are happy that the waste was removed so quickly after Inqilab published the report. We urge the administration to ensure that garbage is not dumped here again.”
Another resident, Md Rafiq Mia, said the administration’s prompt action had helped protect the environment. However, he stressed the need for continued monitoring to prevent people from dumping waste at the site again.
Environmental advocates said that removing the waste was only an immediate solution. They called for lasting measures, including designating a specific dumping site for Tarakanda market and ensuring regular waste collection and disposal. Local residents expressed gratitude to the district and upazila administrations for taking swift action.
