AI Impacting Jobs: Chinese Workers Turn to Low-Waged Manual Labor
According to a recent South China Morning Post article, China’s quick development of artificial intelligence is causing a serious domestic labor market problem, forcing former white-collar employees into low-paying physical jobs. Due to extensive automation and algorithmic integration, job prospects in the administrative, data entry, writing, design, and technical sectors are fast decreasing. The country’s reliance on physical labor is increasing as it moves closer to being a worldwide leader in AI, generating a sizable new underclass of employees to support the high-tech growth.
A demanding new sector with limited salaries has grown to manage the vast data processing and information labeling needed for AI development. Young people with advanced degrees and mid-level professionals who have been thrown out of the business and technological industries are being forced to take low-paying positions as factory workers, delivery drivers, or data labelers. Experts caution that this technological advancement is significantly raising social and economic inequality in the country, concentrating enormous earnings among a small number of IT giants while disturbing the employment market for regular people.
For Chinese officials, finding a balance between safeguarding job opportunities for the younger generation and the rapid advancement of technology continues to be a major concern. Long-term economic stability is under threat by the increasing instability of the domestic workforce as the high-tech industry continues to exceed traditional employment.
