Ancient 200-Year-Old Well Found Beneath Demolished Historic Mosque in India

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following the discovery of an ancient 20-foot-deep well during debris clearance at a recently demolished historic mosque on the premises of the Saharanpur Collectorate Museum. Uncovered on Sunday, September 6, the structure prompted an immediate inspection on Monday by a specialist Archaeological Survey of India team from Lucknow, led by Assistant Archaeological Officer Mr. Manoj Kumar Yadav.

Analyzing the architecture, Yadav stated that the construction style and materials match the late-medieval traditions of the upper and middle Gangetic plains, primarily utilizing lakhauri bricks and lime-surki mortar. Preliminary estimates suggest the well is roughly 200 to 250 years old, though Mr. Yadav cautioned that accumulated debris prevents definitive conclusions until a deeper investigation is completed. Despite intense speculation linking the site to Emperor Shah Jahan or to an ancient temple, the archaeological official advised caution in the public domain in the absence of sufficient concrete evidence.

The discovery has simultaneously ignited state-wide political friction, drawing sharp commentary from prominent government figures. Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Brajesh Pathak maintained that the government remains committed to law and order, noting that any further commentary is inappropriate since the matter is currently sub judice. Meanwhile, Minister Narendra Kashyap directly addressed Samajwadi Party leader Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, asserting that the mosque was removed legally and that a well had been forcibly built over before the mosque was constructed.

Adding to the political reactions, Minister O.P. Rajbhar remarked that the court-ordered demolition and the subsequent emergence of the ancient well are gradually bringing the true underlying history site’s to light. As officials await further archaeological findings from the debris clearance, the unfolding situation continues to polarize local political discourse across Uttar Pradesh.
