Bangladesh in Strong Position at End of Day Three After Tawhid Hridoy’s Epic Double Century

Bangladesh staged a remarkable comeback in the Sylhet Test, powered by an extraordinary double century from Tawhid Hridoy. In reply to West Indies’ first-innings total of 356, the hosts scored 386 to take a 30-run lead. While Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals, Mr. Hridoy held one end firmly and remained unbeaten on 242. At the close of the third day, West Indies had scored seven without loss in their second innings and were still 23 runs behind.
Bangladesh were under pressure at the start of the day after losing three wickets for 88 runs. Mr. Hridoy, who was unbeaten on 29 overnight, was joined at the crease by Mushfiqur Rahim. The pair added 73 runs for the fourth wicket, giving Bangladesh some relief.
However, Mr. Mushfiqur’s dismissal for 34 off 76 balls triggered another collapse. Litton Das scored eight, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 16 and Hasan Mahmud one before being dismissed. Bangladesh were struggling at 184 for seven and faced the prospect of falling well behind. But Mr. Hridoy remained firm at the other end.
He then built a crucial partnership with Taijul Islam for the eighth wicket. During this stand, Bangladesh crossed the 200, 250 and 300-run marks. Mr. Hridoy reached his maiden Test century in 171 balls before completing his double century off 304 deliveries.
Even after Mr. Taijul was dismissed for 91, Mr. Hridoy continued his resistance. He also put together a valuable partnership with Taskin Ahmed for the final wicket. Mr. Hridoy eventually remained unbeaten on 242 off 359 balls, hitting 22 fours and 11 sixes. It is now the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter in Test cricket. The previous record belonged to Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 219 against Zimbabwe in 2018.
Powered by Mr. Hridoy’s remarkable innings, Bangladesh were all out for 386 in 111.5 overs, securing a 30-run first-innings lead over West Indies. Earlier, West Indies had scored 356 in their first innings, thanks to a century from Aamir Jangoo, who made 133.
Kevin Wickham scored 61, while Justin Greaves contributed 51. Hasan Mahmud was Bangladesh’s leading bowler, taking six wickets for 90 runs. Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed two wickets each. West Indies began their second innings with a 30-run deficit. They scored seven without losing a wicket in the final four overs of the day. They will begin the fourth day 23 runs behind, with all 10 wickets intact.
