Bangladesh Reclaims UNGA Presidency After four decades

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman is going to take over the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He will formally assume this important responsibility next Tuesday. The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to officially begin on September 8. After this, the high-level general debate will begin on September 22 with speeches by heads of state and government.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman will also preside over this session. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver a speech at this year’s UN session. As a result, Bangladesh’s participation in the session is expected to carry special importance. On June 2, representatives of the UN member states elected Dr. Khalilur Rahman as the President of the 81st session of the UNGA through a secret ballot in an election held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Previously, former Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary and politician Humayun Rashid Chowdhury served as the President of the 41st session of the UN General Assembly in 1986. After almost four decades, a Bangladeshi is once again going to fulfill the important duty of President of the UN General Assembly, the world’s largest multilateral forum.

Under the leadership of Dr. Khalilur Rahman, this session will discuss various global issues, international cooperation, and issues of interest to member states. At the same time, this responsibility can also play an important role in highlighting various national and international priorities of Bangladesh on the world stage
