Ben-Gvir Backs Killing 30–40 Palestinians Every Night in Gaza

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for the killing of 30 to 40 Palestinians in Gaza every night, including people who are not considered an immediate threat.  He made the remarks in a podcast interview with former Israeli prisoner Rom Braslavsky that aired on Sunday, August 16. He criticized the reduction in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and called for more targeted killings. He said military operations should not be limited to people posing an immediate threat. He described some Palestinians in Gaza as people who “do not deserve to live” and “are not even human.”

He also opposed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to reduce Israeli military operations in Gaza and called for a stronger campaign. He does not have direct authority to order Israeli military strikes. He is a member of Israel’s security cabinet and oversees the national police and prison system. During the podcast, he also discussed Israel’s recently enacted death penalty law for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks against Israelis. When Braslavsky suggested that the security minister carry out an execution himself, he said he would “turn the world upside down” to get the opportunity.

He also supported encouraging Palestinians to leave Gaza permanently and establishing Israeli settlements there, repeating his claim that “All of Gaza is ours.” International law experts have warned that the forced removal of Palestinians from Gaza could raise serious questions under international law. Ben-Gvir’s statements have also drawn international criticism, including sanctions from the UK and several European countries.
