Dhaka Elevated Expressway to Remain Toll-Free for Six Hours Today

All authorised vehicles will be allowed to use the Dhaka Elevated Expressway without paying tolls for six hours today, Saturday (November 7), marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

The toll-free facility will remain in effect from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm. Toll collection will resume under the previous rules after noon.

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority announced the decision in a press release. It said no toll would be collected from vehicles using the expressway between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm on the occasion.

Currently, toll rates on the expressway vary according to vehicle categories. Cars, taxis, SUVs, microbuses with fewer than 16 seats and light trucks weighing less than three tonnes are charged Tk 80. Buses with 16 or more seats are charged Tk 160, six-wheel medium trucks Tk 320 and trucks with more than six wheels Tk 400.

However, two- and three-wheeled vehicles, including rickshaws, motorcycles and CNG-run auto-rickshaws, are prohibited from using the expressway. The restrictions will remain in place during the toll-free period.

The 19.73-kilometre Dhaka Elevated Expressway is being constructed under a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement. On September 2, 2023, the section from Kawla near the airport to Tejgaon in Farmgate was opened to traffic. Vehicles are currently using this section.

According to the project plan, the expressway is supposed to run from Kawla through Tejgaon, Moghbazar and Kamalapur to Kutubkhali in Jatrabari. However, construction of the entire project has not yet been completed.
