Dissent Does Not Equate To Anti-nationalism: Huma Qureshi

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi has voiced her support for ordinary citizens who engage in peaceful protests and demand accountability from the government. In her view, expressing dissent is a fundamental democratic right, not a privilege granted at the discretion of those in power.

The actress recently clarified her position in a statement posted on Instagram. She said her support was not directed towards any particular political party or individual, but towards citizens exercising their democratic rights.

In her statement, Ms. Huma wrote, “It is because I love this country that I cannot remain silent.” She also expressed concern that speaking out against injustice could expose her to abuse, personal attacks, questions about her finances or even professional repercussions.

According to the actress, patriotism does not mean silently accepting everything or offering unquestioning loyalty. She stressed that the right to express dissent must be respected in a democracy.
“Patriotism does not mean blind silence. Democracy does not mean blind loyalty. And expressing dissent is not an anti-national act,” she stated.

Concluding her statement, Ms. Huma wrote, “The whole world is watching. We must do better.”
Her remarks highlighted the importance of peaceful protest, freedom of expression and ensuring government accountability.
