Government Pushes to Modernise Postal Service

The government is taking comprehensive initiatives to transform the Bangladesh Post Office into a modern, people-friendly, and profitable institution, stated Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam. Speaking as the chief guest at a commemorative postage stamp unveiling and award ceremony held yesterday at Dak Bhaban in Dhaka for World Post Day 2026, he highlighted that public trust in postal services is rising alongside positive progress in parcel operations. He urged officials to maintain this momentum, emphasizing that collective dedication and responsibility are crucial to boosting capacity, service quality, and revenue.
Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam also revealed that foreign investors have expressed keen interest in investing in the country’s postal sector. Addressing queries about the mobile financial service Nagad, the Minister clarified that the government currently has no plans to sell the platform; instead, targeted initiatives are underway to modernize and make it more profitable. Turning to national infrastructure, he noted that domestic and foreign experts are actively working toward commissioning the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with plans to supply power to the national grid once all necessary technical evaluations, testing, and inspections are complete.
Underlining the essential role of staff motivation, the Minister stated that recognition drives employee efficiency and performance. He stressed that the tradition of rewarding merit must continue, with particular priority given to evaluating grassroots post offices and workers. Speaking as a special guest, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, Bilkis Jahan Rimi, emphasized the delivery of modern, technology-driven services through existing infrastructure. She announced that initiatives are being taken to coordinate with Land Service Support Centers and expand postal franchise operations to bring services to citizens’ doorsteps while creating fresh employment opportunities.
This year’s World Post Day was observed under the theme ‘Integrated Postal Network, Unlimited Possibilities,’ accompanied by a nationwide Postal Service Week from October 9 to October 15. A series of centralized and nationwide programs were organized, including letter festivals, philatelic exhibitions, essay and drawing competitions, and postal fairs across 26 venues, including 25 universities and colleges and Cox’s Bazar sea beach. Notably, around 4,643 letters were dispatched through these festivals, significantly revitalizing interest and practice in handwritten correspondence among the younger generation.
The event, presided over by Director General of the Directorate of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam, concluded with honors presented to 29 individuals. The awardees included five students winning essay and drawing contests, three international letter-writing competition winners, four employees recognized for extraordinary contributions to postal ballot operations, eleven staff and officers for outstanding service in letter and postal operations, and six Nagad representatives. These initiatives and recognitions are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing service quality, expanding postal reach, and strengthening public engagement across the country.
