Govt Committed to Business-Friendly Economy: PM
Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman has urged US companies to invest and expand in Bangladesh, assuring them of government support and a business-friendly environment. Speaking to a 50-member US-Bangladesh Business Council delegation at the Secretariat yesterday, he said the government was improving infrastructure, ports, logistics and energy security while encouraging investment in renewable energy and modern technology. “We welcome your capital, technology, expertise and global experience,” the PM said, adding that the government was committed to simplifying regulations and pursuing business-friendly economic and fiscal policies. “Our goal is to build a private-sector-led, rules-based and globally connected economy. We want US businesses to be partners in this transformation,” he added.
The PM said energy, infrastructure, technology, digital services, finance, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and logistics offer significant opportunities for US businesses. The government is also working to strengthen investor protection, improve tax and VAT administration, reduce bureaucratic hurdles and digitise public services. Mr. Rahman said Bangladesh aims to build a $1 trillion economy by 2034 through targeted incentives and investment in skills and technology. He also called for stronger bilateral trade and a long-term economic partnership with the US. “Consider the entire government your partner. We are here to listen, respond and cooperate,” he said.
He also assured full government support for expanding Mathematics Olympiad activities across Bangladesh. Meeting Bangladeshi winners of the International Mathematical Olympiad and European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, he agreed to government funding to expand school-level Olympiad activities and approved a proposal to introduce activity-oriented mathematics in schools. He also assured that a proposal for a separate mathematics proficiency test for schoolteachers, similar to IELTS, would be considered. Relevant ministers, advisers, officials, Olympiad organisers, coaches and medal-winning students were present at the meeting.
