Govt to launch ‘Notun Kuri Para Sports’ in September

The government will launch ‘Notun Kuri Para Sports’, a nationwide talent hunt for athletes with disabilities, in September to identify future national and international competitors. It also plans to add 200 athletes to the sports allowance programme within a month. State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque made the announcement while inaugurating the Asian Para Games training camp at the National Stadium in Dhaka. He said the government was implementing long-term plans to provide year-round training, modern facilities and international-standard preparation for athletes with disabilities.

The state minister said the prime minister had given policy-level approval for an international-standard national competition. “If possible, the prime minister herself will inaugurate the event,” he said. The competition will include participants from all 64 districts. Aminul said the goal was to identify talented athletes in remote areas and develop them for the Asian Para Games, Paralympics and other global competitions. He said 300 athletes currently receive regular sports allowances, while another 200 would be added, bringing the total to 500. Medal-winning athletes at international events would also gradually be included.

Calling for greater social acceptance, Aminul said, “Instead of hiding them, they should be given the necessary support and encouragement.” He also announced plans for a sports hub and a modern complex for athletes with disabilities.
