India-China Border Talks Held for Two Days, Signaling Positive Progress in Relations

India and China have concluded a historic two-day high-level military meeting along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) adjacent to Arunachal Pradesh, marking the first-ever Corps Commander-level talks between the two nations in the eastern sector. The strategic dialogue took place on September 6 in Wacha on the Indian side, followed by a subsequent session on September 7 in Damai on the Chinese side. This diplomatic and military engagement builds directly upon the foundational understandings reached during the Special Representative-level talks held in August 2025 and August 2026, alongside prior meetings of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination in Beijing and New Delhi.

The Indian delegation during these crucial talks was led by Lieutenant General Mr. Girish Kalia, Commander of the Indian Army’s 3 Corps, which maintains primary operational responsibility for the eastern region of Arunachal Pradesh. While specific outcomes or details regarding new border agreements have not been publicly disclosed, the high-level dialogue is widely regarded as a vital component of ongoing bilateral efforts to maintain continuous military communication, manage border tensions, and foster long-term stability.

Bilateral ties between New Delhi and Beijing had experienced a prolonged strain following the severe border clash in eastern Ladakh back in 2020. However, recent months have witnessed a noticeable shift, with both regional powers systematically ramping up diplomatic and military communication channels to keep the border situation under control and gradually normalize overall relations.

Following the conclusion of the meetings, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Mr. Randhir Jaiswal addressed the developments publicly, stating, ‘India-China relations are gradually moving in a positive direction’. He further emphasized the critical importance of advancing this normalization process alongside expanding bilateral people-to-people exchanges, noting that proactive initiatives to enhance mutual contact, such as streamlined visa arrangements, are essential for successfully rebuilding trust and improving bilateral ties moving forward.
